Breastfeeding Friends Association Prepares to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week

The Breastfeeding Friends Association announced that it has finished preparations to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, which is held on August 1-7 under the slogan “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together.”

The Association, established under the umbrella of Sharjah Supreme Council for Family Affairs, will organize a number of educational activations and awareness initiatives across the Emirate in cooperation with a number of hospitals, healthcare centers, and governmental departments.

Khawla Abdulaziz Al Nouman, Head of Breastfeeding Friends Association, said “Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, has always stressed on the importance of providing high quality health services to enhance health standards in Sharjah. This vision stems from Her Highness’s firm belief that a healthy person is more capable of contributing to the development of his society”.

“World Breastfeeding Week is one of the Association’s most important annual activities, as it represents a chance to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding in preserving the health of children and mothers. Breastfeeding has also been proven to play a vital role in reducing the risk of many diseases, which contributes to ensuring a healthy environment for future generations,” she added.

For her part, Dr. Ruqeya Fikri, Deputy Head of the Association, explained that relying only on breastfeeding for nourishing the babies plays a vital role in eliminating malnutrition as breastfeeding have long-term benefits for mother and child alike.

According to the Association, breastfeeding affects four fields: eliminating malnutrition. This is only realized by establishing a supportive environment that encourages women to breastfeed their babies.

The second field is life, health, and vitality, as breastfeeding is pivotal for the health of both mother and child. The third is environmental and climate changes, as mother’s milk is natural and sustainable. It is delivered to the babies without any contaminants, packaging, or creating waste. It is widely known that formula milk production has a negative impact on the environment that goes unnoticed.

The fourth and final field is the productivity and work of women, as it is very important to set laws and regulations that protect women’s right to have the chance to breastfeed their babies.

It is worth mentioning that Breastfeeding Friends Association is sponsored by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. The Association strives to improve the physical and psychological health of children and mothers by encouraging breastfeeding, which is the best way to form a healthy familial bond and build a secure society.
