Mr Muhammad Tahir Lakhani, the member of the Propeller Club of the United States, is the Chairman and the Managing Director of his own business named Dubai Trading Agency LLC (DTA) Dubai, UAE.
He continues to play an important role in promoting the UAE as an important regional and international hub for maritime trade and logistics. He was born in Karachi Pakistan on 27th April 1962 into a well- respected family. Mr Tahir Lakhani represented the UAE as the Vice Chairman of the UAE Shipping Association until 2019.
Mr. Muhammad Tahir Lakhani has keen interest in sports since his young age and he has been playing at a professional level in tennis. He earned several achievements while playing at his age where representing Pakistan at the Davis Cup was the biggest one. Even though playing Junior Wimbledon was also his one other major achievement in tennis. After all these achievements he then decided to explore the ship recycling industry with his earned experience.
While talking about his experience in the ship industry, it was his very early age when he joined the shipping industry. When he was 20th, Tahir Lakhani had joined a ship recycling yard in Pakistan. That ship recycling yard belonged to his friend where Mr Tahir dedicatedly worked. He spent 3 years working for 8 am to 8 pm on ships where he used to supervise the movement of steel plates.
After being involved in the shipping industry, he then decided to move from Pakistan and chose Dubai to start his new journey. In 1985, Mr. Muhammad Tahir Lakhani finally started his business to buy & sell ships. The process of his business was to buy ships and to sell on to the recycling yards for decommissioning.
Apparently, Tahir Lakhani Dubai was the first ‘cash buyer’ of vessels to set up fully fledged operations in the UAE, simultaneously, he was the one to hold the first Green Recycling Conference in Dubai, in partnership with international maritime publication Tradewinds.
In the year 1996, the purchase of three ex-Adriatic Tankers VLCC’s in international waters off the UAE and delivering them to breakers in Pakistan was the biggest ship demolition deals ever made. In a few years only his business became very successful and till 1997 it was known as the biggest “cash buyer” of ships in the world, buying and selling over 100 ships per year.
Considering the business requirement of having an international platform, in the year 1999, he decided to move with his family to the UK where he built on his industry connections. Muhammad Tahir Lakhani received the British citizen in 2009 and continued to visit Dubai on a regular basis, expanding the business in both volume and scale, eventually moving back in 2014.Email This Post
