In the UAE, Filipinos are the third-largest expatriate group comprising of almost a million residents spread across the seven Emirates. Recently, Instagram verified three popular Filipino personalities’ accounts on their social media platform namely Josh M. Yugen – a magazine publisher, concert producer and social media personality, Michael Cinco and Furne Amato – two of the most popular Dubai-based Filipino fashion designers who has made it big in the Hollywood and International markets by working with big names in the entertainment industry such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, to name just a few.

Josh M. Yugen is a multi-awarded writer, fashion maven, socialite, and entrepreneur as the brain of two trending companies – Yugen PR and XPEDITION Middle East magazine. Josh M. Michael Cinco is a Filipino fashion designer. He launched his eponymous fashion line in Dubai in 2003. His provincial upbringing made him fantasize about the glamour of dressing up Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford, and Audrey Hepburn, later saying “I pictured those fabulous heroines and imagined dressing them up in my creations. I chased after those visions…” Cinco studied Fine Arts at the prestigious University of the Philippines Diliman for two years eventually transferring at Slims Fashion and Arts School in Manila. He then took up supplementary courses at Central Saint Martins in London.

Cinco’s clients include international celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ellie Goulding, Nicole Scherzinger, Fergie Ferguson, Dita Von Teese, Brandy Norwood, Ashanti, Chris Brown, Tyra Banks, and Naomi Campbell, among others.

Cinco dressed fellow Filipino and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach at the 2016 Miss Universe pageant held in Manila on January 30, 2017. He also designed Iris Mittenaere’s farewell gown for the Miss Universe 2017 pageant held in Las Vegas later that same year. Cinco designed the wedding gown of Austrian singer and Swarovski empire heiress Victoria Swarovski when she wed Werner Murz in June 2017 in Italy. The gown valued at over US$1 million and weighing 46 kilograms has an eight meter long train adorned by 500,000 of Swarovski’s family-owned crystals. The bride also wore another Cinco creation, in red, at the wedding party. Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai reprised her stellar black tie wardrobe with another couture gown by the designer at 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

Furne Amato

Born in the creative capital of Asia – Philippines, Furne One found his muse in his mother and grandmother through their personal style. His love for the unique and inherent quintessential edginess inspired the designer to sketch dresses as early as 10 years old. Even though he didn’t train in fashion, Furne’s natural affinity for artistic design pushed him to participate in the country’s prestigious design competition: MEGA Magazine’s Young Designer of Philippines Award 1994 – in which he won.

The competition was judged by international fashion players. One of whom was lingerie designer – Josie Natori. She was so impressed with Furne’s work and understanding of design that she offered him an internship in both her design studios in Paris and New York.

Deconstruction at a time of structure, subtle style with rare texturing was the alternative signature Furne showcased when he represented the Philippines in Japan 1994. He took home prestigious Japan’s Women Wear Award; going on to be a finalist at Manila’s Fashion Designer Award. Having achieved this, he was returning to New York when he stopped in Dubai and fell in love with the city.

Amato is UAE’s first global designer brand that has earned itself an international cult following – from royalty to international celebrities – super-model Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks to singing sensations such as Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jessie J. who are all loyal patrons of the paradigmatic couture house.
