Under the theme “Let’s Run Together”, the Friends of Arthritis Patients Society (FAPS) concluded its 7th Annual Charity Marathon, which was held along Al Mamzar beach with the participation of more than 7000 contestants. The event aimed to shed light on arthritis and the necessity of consolidating efforts to raise awareness about the disease and help patients confront its challenges successfully.
In the wake of several competitions and challenges, the marathon was concluded by crowning the winners of the first three positions in the 4-race categories. In the meantime, the participants hailed the Emirate of Sharjah for hosting and organizing such major events distinctively, in particular, that the marathon continues to attract more contestants and supporters. The marathon was accompanied by awareness, artistic and sports activities, such as karate show of Self-Defence Sports Club and gymnastics show.
Promoting Community Awareness
HE Waheeda Abdul Aziz, Head of the Friends of Arthritis Patients Society, shed the light on the remarkable participation of members of the society and institutions in the marathon. The event also witnessed the presence of the Palestinian pop singer, Mohammad Assaf, alongside some prominent community figures.
She thanked Sharjah Police, Sharjah Sports Council and other public and private institutions for its great support to the event.
The Head of the Friends of Arthritis Patients Society further said: “It’s a great pleasure to meet in this community sport event, which we are keen to organize annually, in line with the directives of Her Highness SheikhaJawaher Mohammed Al Qassimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.”
“H.H SheikhaJawaher is keen to provide a healthy environment and to support patients in Sharjah, in collaboration with Sharjah Police, Sharjah Sports Council and a number of government institutions, in order to promote the awareness about arthritis, one of the common diseases in the UAE, in addition to supporting patients who are facing daily challenges and helping them enjoy a healthy and happy lifestyle at the same time,” Ms. Waheeda added.
She pointed out that the marathon is a way to make a positive change in the society, by garnering support to patients and maintaining physical activity and healthy lifestyle, noting that one of this marathon’s goals is to raise awareness about arthritis, considering its prevalence in the UAE, where one person out of five of different ages are suffering from this disease, according to the latest studies. The matter that will have a negative impact on the person’s entire life.
HE Waheeda Abdul Aziz further elaborated: “The event aims at raising awareness on management and treatment of arthritis. We believe this is a good chance to support those who are having arthritis and to shed light on this essential health issue, within the context of spreading the awareness and supporting patients and their families.”
She thanked all those who took part in the event from various segments of the society. She also thanked the event sponsors and supporters, whether from government or private institutions.

At the end of the event, the Marathon Committee honored the partners and cooperating institutions.
