- The marathon will be launched on the 24th of February at Al Mamzar in Sharjah
The Friends of Arthritis Patients Associations has announced that it has completed its preparations for its 6th annual marathon that will take place on the 24th of February, under the slogan “Call now, don’t hesitate.” The marathon will be held along the coast of Al Mamzar beach and will continue until the Al Qasba Roundabout. The marathon, which will take place on Saturday, is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants of all ages.
The marathon aims to raise awareness on Arthritis and its symptoms and ways of treatment. The marathon, which starts at 4 pm, also aims to provide moral and financial support to arthritis patients.
Waheeda Abdul Aziz, Head of the Friends of Arthritis Patients Association, stated that the marathon represents an important annual event for the Association, where it has successfully attracted more than 8,000 participants of all ages during its last 5 editions. She also stated that the marathon has contributed to raising awareness on Arthritis, and its causes and ways of prevention. She added that the marathon also helps to support Arthritis patients and their families through the community’s involvement in the race.
Abdul Aziz called on all members of the community to participate in this marathon that encourages physical activity and promotes a healthier lifestyle. She also noted that registration is free and can be done at the marathon’s location. She added that the marathon will also include family events, health checks and consultations that will be organized in cooperation with the health support Associations of the Health promotion Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah.
The marathon runs a total distance of six kilometers and consists of five stages. The first stage is one kilometer long and consists of a walking race for male and female retirees with Arthritis who are part of the Association, as well as people with mobility disabilities. The second stage is a one kilometer running race for boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 10 years old, in addition to people with mental and hearing disabilities.
The third stage is 2 Kilometers long and is organized for young boys and girls, as well as people with mental disabilities, from the ages of 11 to 15 years old. The fourth stage is 4 Kilometers long and is organized for young boys between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. The fifth and final stage is 6 Kilometers long and is organized for the general public, as well as those with mental disabilities, who are at least 18 years old.
At the end of the marathon, the three winners from each stage will be rewarded. Prizes will also be presented to the winners of each of the following categories: the ideal family, the biggest racer, the smallest racer, the most supportive government institution in terms of numbers, the best media coverage and the best participating nationality.
The Friends of Arthritis Patients Association is one of the health support Associations of the Health promotion Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah. The Association was established in 2008 to raise awareness on the symptoms and causes of Arthritis, its ways of prevention, and its latest available treatments.
