Elyse Villani Audio

A sensational century from Elyse Villani steered the Australian Women’s Cricket Team to a 103-run win against South Africa in their ICC Women’s World Cup warm-up match at Oakham School today.

Defending a strong total of 5-324, Australia got off to the perfect start when Beth Mooney ran Lizelle Lee out for 0.

Trisha Chetty (62) was impressive batting at number three for South Africa, but a steady flow of wickets made sure Australia stayed in the box seat.

A defiant half-century to captain Dan van Niekerk (54) kept South Africa in the game, but it was to no avail as Australia finished off the tail, restricting the Proteas to 221.

Jess Jonassen (3-29) and Belinda Vakarewa (2-34) finished with multiple wickets, while Ellyse Perry (1-35), Megan Schutt (1-46), Ashleigh Gardner (1-15) and Sarah Aley (1-37) finished with a wicket-a-piece.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Australia stumbled to 3-40 as Nicole Bolton (14), Beth Mooney (24) and Meg Lanning (0) struggled to get on top of the South African bowling attack.

The wicket of Lanning brought Villani (137) to the crease and alongside Ellyse Perry (67), the duo combined for a 167-run partnership to swing the momentum in favour of the Australians.

Late cameos to Alex Blackwell (32) and Alyssa Healy (25) ensured Australia passed the 300-mark.

Australia will complete a second warm-up match against Pakistan on Thursday, before opening their World Cup campaign on 26 June against the West Indies in Taunton.
