350 Athletes Sign Up for SWSF’s Ramadan Women’s Sports Gathering

  • Ninth edition will see participation of 20 local and overseas sports clubs

The ninth Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament will be held from 27 May until 2 June, its organisers Sharjah Women’s Sport Foundation (SWSF) recently announced. The weeklong event, which will bring together 350 female athletes from 20 sports clubs, will be held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) and Chairperson of SWSF.

Local and regional sports clubs as well as private companies will be part of this year’s tournament, and compete in three types of sports including basketball, volleyball and archery.

“In our commitment to the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi, the Foundation has devised a forward-thinking strategy in creating a conducive environment for the development of Emirati women through yearlong sporting events and competitions,” said HE Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Director General of SWSF, highlighting that doing so allows female athletes to hone their skills and participate actively in the sports scene at home and abroad.

“The ninth edition of the Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament builds on the success of the previous tournaments, which were based on the idea of bringing out the best in oneself during the holy month. This year, we also enjoy a great deal of attention from various sports sectors and institutions, in addition to the players themselves. All these positives add up to reflect the physical and mental benefits the tournament has provided its participants, and has consequently enjoyed a growth in reputation.

“We are pleased that a women’s basketball team from Kuwait will take part in the Ramadan tournament this year.”

Naqbi noted the various accomplishments of the Sharjah women’s sports teams in several local and regional tournaments, highlighting their recent feats at the fifth edition of the GCC Women’s Games 2017, which took place in the Qatari capital of Doha.

“We hope the ninth Ramadan Tournament will witness outstanding competitions, and further cement the honourable image that women in sports are attaining in Sharjah, and the UAE.”

The tournament aims to provide a platform to unite female athletes during Ramadan, and help them gain the experience and expertise they require to prepare themselves for bigger format competitions. It also aims to ignite enthusiasm and a challenging spirit among players.

Al Naqbi concluded: “Our teams are well prepared, as they undergo a series of rigorous training programmes through the year. These help our players gain the necessary skills to compete at highest levels of sports tournaments within the UAE and abroad. Their stellar performance and teamwork at recent locally organised volleyball and basketball tournaments are an example.”

On the fringe of the main event, a series of fun-filled Ramadan meetings will be organised where players will enjoy the spiritual ambience of the month and get a chance to know each other. SWSF strives through such tournaments to step up efforts in promoting the status of women’s sports in the emirate, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

In November 2016, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah, issued an Emiri Decree setting up the Sharjah Women’s Sport Foundation (SWSF) that enjoys administrative and financial independence with full legal competence to pursue its activities and achieve its goals.

As per the decree, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi has been named Chairperson of the Foundation, and is assisted by an advisory committee comprising highly experienced and qualified members, whose in-depth knowledge of the Foundation’s areas of activities is instrumental in decision making.
